This exhibition presents 49 cut-outs designed by children aged 3-16. The figures were designed by children who were admitted to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore during October and November 2014. 42 children participated in the project.
Each figure represents a hero the children are particularly fond of – comic superheroes, loved ones, parents, doctors and nurses, but also characters born out of their very own imagination. The activity was part of ward-based art therapy sessions led by an art therapist and an intern. The paediatric patients sat together in small groups for two hours creating their own heroes based on cut-out templates. For children who were bed bound, the therapists worked individually at their bedsides.
The objective of the project was to explore the concepts of hope, resilience and strength and to provide some respite for the children. The number 49 was chosen to represent Singapore’s age in 2014. Singapore gained it’s independence in 1965. Today Singapore is home to a population of
nearly 5.5 million people, who are as culturally diverse as the heroes emerged from this project.
