The Children’s Art Museum as a Learning Environment for the Police Academy
Since 2017, the Children’s Art Museum has collaborated with the Police University College through its annual continuing education program on Cultural Understanding and Diversity. The field trip to the museum is a regular part of the course curriculum and provides participants with an alternative learning environment where children’s artistic expression serves as a basis for reflection, dialogue, and a greater understanding of diversity in society. This initiative was launched by Jaishankar Ganapathy of the Police University College—an associate professor and program director for two continuing education programs: Cultural Understanding and Diversity, and Conflict Management in a Multicultural Society.
Through encounters with art created by children, themes such as identity, belonging, power, exclusion, conflict, and social development are explored. Children’s artwork conveys experiences and perspectives that are often difficult to express in words, and offers a unique insight into how children experience the world around them.
A central part of the tour is the presentation of what the museum refers to as “the difficult images.” These are works of art that address themes such as violence, insecurity, flight, migration, grief, loss, and social tensions. The images spark conversations about children’s living conditions and about how the police’s role, responsibilities, and scope of action can be understood in light of children’s own experiences and perspectives.
The visit is considered valuable both in the police’s preventive work and in interactions with people who find themselves in vulnerable or challenging life situations. The purpose is to deepen participants’ understanding of how culture and the arts can contribute to insights into diversity, communication, and societal challenges, while also providing an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and practices as police officers.
This experience-based approach contributes to increased reflection, a deeper understanding of different cultures, and better communication when interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and with varied life experiences. The collaboration between the Children’s Art Museum and the Police University College has been ongoing from 2017 to 2025 and constitutes an important part of continuing education in cultural understanding and diversity.
